Abstract:
Bac kgrou nd: Aqueous leaf extra ct of Albizia cheva lieri has been re por ted to
ha ve a sig ni fi ca nt hypog lyce mic eff e ct in al loxan in du ced dia be tic ra ts.
Ma te rials and met ho ds: The eff ec ts of the aqueous leaf extra ct on he mato
lo gic va riab les and his to pat ho lo gic ana lyses we re as ses sed in ra ts trea ted
wi th acu te and su b-chro nic do ses. Rats trea ted wi th acu te do ses re cei ved between
0 and 3000 mg/kg bo dy weig ht of the extra ct oral ly in a sin gle do se,
whe reas tho se trea ted wi th su b-chro nic do ses re cei ved be tween 0 and 1500
mg/kg bo dy weig ht per day for 28 days. Blood and tis sue sam ples we re analyzed
for the tes ted pa ra me te rs at the end of the ob ser va tion pe riod.
Re sul ts: The extra ct had no sig ni fi ca nt (P>0.05) eff e ct on he mog lo bin concen
tra tion, red blood ce ll cou nt, pac ked ce ll vo lu me, whi te blood ce ll and
diff e ren tial coun ts, and pla te le ts cou nt in the acu te toxi ci ty te st. The mean
ce ll vo lu me (MCV), mean ce ll he mog lo bin (MCH) and mean ce ll he mog lo bin
con cen tra tion (MCHC) of ra ts trea ted wi th acu te and su b-chro nic do ses of the
extra ct we re not sig ni fi can tly (P>0.05) aff ec ted. Pac ked ce ll vo lu me (PCV),
whi te blood ce ll (WBC) and diff e ren tial coun ts we re sig ni fi can tly (P<0.05) diffe
re nt from the con trol in a no n-do se de pen de nt fas hion in the su b-chro nic
toxi ci ty stu dy. Rat li ver, kid ney and hea rt tis sues ana lyzed his to pat ho lo gi cal ly
we re nor mal upon bo th acu te and su b-chro nic ad mi nis tra tion of the extra ct.
