dc.description.abstract Diabetes Mellitus (DM) and Thyroid D ysfunction (TD) are the two most common endocrinopathies seen in general population. T ype 2 d iabetes m ellitus(T2DM) is commonly associated with altered thyroid function. The aim of the research i s to evaluate TD in patients w ith T 2DM attending E ndocrinology C linic of UsmanuDanfodiyo University Teaching Hospital , Sokoto. Blood s ample s were collected f rom 80 T ype 2 diabetic patients a nd 80 non diabetic (control) and analyze fo r fasting blood s ugar ( FB S ) , g ly cated he moglobin (HbA 1c ) , t h yroid stimulating h ormone (TS H) , t ri i odothyrorine (T3), t hyroxin (T4 ) , cholesterol, t riglycerides (T G ) , high density l ipoprotein ( H DL - C )and low density l ipoproteins (LDL - C) . The level s , of FBS, HbA1 c , Cholesterol, TG and LDL - C were observ ed to be signif icantly high and the level of H DL - C was significantly low in diabetics as compared to control( non dia betic patients ) . The level s of T3 and T4 were significantly low while the level of TSH was signif icantly high in T ype 2 diabetic s a s compared to non diabetic s . Pearson correlation shows a very strong positive relationship between FBS and HbA1c and weak positive relationship between these s ugar s and Thyroid hormones (TSH,T3 ,and T4 ) . Thyroid dysfunction may complicates metabolic con t r o l in diabetes melli tus (DM).It is therefore patients to recognize and where necessary treat thyroid dysfunction in order to stabilize metabolic control. en_US
