Abstract:
A 10-month (March to December 1998) incidence survey for Sarcoptes scabei Vi" cameli infection among
236 camels with skin diseases was determined by parasitological examination of skin scrapings. Detection
rates for parasite between male and female camels, and seasons of the year were statistically compared
(t test). Twenty one (8.9%) of the 236 skin samples examined were found to be positive for the
parasite. Sarcoptes ~" tbei Vi" cameli was detected in 8.8% and 9.2% of the samples from male and
female camels respectively. There was no significant difference between detection rates in both sexes
(P<O.OS). Sarcoptes scabei var cameli was detected throughout the study period and the incidence was
found to be higher in the months of September through December. The epidemiology and control of
mange in camels is discussed.
