Abstract:
The prevalence of fascioliasis in ruminants was studied in Kebbi State.
A total of 2880 ruminants were selected. Faecal samples of these ruminants were
collected from 16 sampling locations; 2 sampling locations from each of the 8 LGA's
were randomly selected from 4 Agricultural zones of the state. The faecal samples
were analyzed for Fasciola eggs using McMaster egg counting technique. Out of the
2880 faecal samples collected, 434 (IS. 1%) were positive for Fasciola eggs. The
overall result showed a seasonal pattern; higher during the rainy season and lower
during the dry season. Cattle had the highest prevalence of (21. 5%), sheep (13. 5%)
and goats (10. 2%). Higher prevalence rate was recorded in riverine area (Argungu,
4.7%, Yauri, 4. 6% and Bunza 4.2% as against Zuru zone with as low as 1. 6%). In
conclusion, this study confirms the prevalence of fascioliasis in kebbi state especially
in fadama areas and in cattle. It is therefore suggested that adequate control measures
be taken to reduce prevalence of this infestation to forstall animal losses which might
occur due to to this disease.
