dc.description.abstract A total of 104 seminal fluids from men with both fertility and infertility problems attending the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital, were investigated during the period of study (April 2006 - January 2007). The Seminal fluids were examined macroscopically and cultured on blood and MacConkey agar media. The results obtained after 48hrs of incubation at 37°C indicated that 64 (61.5%) of the semen specimens yielded growth of bacteria including 36 (35%) of Staphylococcus aureus, 15 (14.4%) Escherichia coli. Other bacterial isolates included Pseudomonas spp (6%), Streptococcus faccalis (3%), Klebsiella spp (2%) and S. albus (2%). The seminal fluid analysis showed 44 (42%) reduction in volume and percentage normal motility (asthenozoospermia), 42 (40%) were oligospermic, 15 (14%) azoospermic, while 59 (56%) were normospermic with 33 (31%) showing no infection. Statistical analysis showed that infection of the seminal fluids was significantly associated with low volume, low sperm density, low motility and increased abnormal spermatozoa forms (P<0.05). en_US
